Compared with August 2007…

  • The average UK household had £132 a week of income left after tax and essentials in August 2008, falling by 7.4% from a year earlier.
  • The average UK family is £11 a week worse off compared with August 2007.
  • Inflation on the average UK family’s spending on essential goods rose to 5.5%, with the main contribution coming from rising food, gas and electricity prices.
  • Transport costs remain higher than last year despite recent falls in the price of oil.
  • The income tracker was revised upwards as earnings growth was higher than expected in July – but the tracker has fallen relative to a year ago in each of the last five months.
  • Up and down the country, families continue to come under pressure from inflation running at its highest level for 16 years.
