Compared with May 2008…

  • The average UK household had £164 a week of discretionary income in May 2009, 4.8 per cent higher than a year earlier.
  • The average UK family is £7 a week better off than in May 2008 as the cost of living declines - largely driven by the effects of Bank of England interest rate cuts.
  • In addition, the cost of electricity fell in May, while transport costs are 1.1 per cent lower than a year earlier.
  • Gross income rose by £9 a week in May 2009 compared with a year earlier.
